In 1850, Mr and Mrs W. Packard moved to the village of Warren, here they raised 5 children, including William Doud, and James Ward, along with 3 daughter.

James Ward Packard, the son of Warren Packard was born on November 5th 1864. 

 

William and James both attended and gained a degree in engineering at Lehigh University. After graduating from Lehigh University in 1884 with a degree in mechanical engineering, James Ward took a position with the Sawyer-Mann Electric Company in New York City, where he worked there for six years (1884-1890).  After leaving the Sawyer-Mann Electrical Company, he returned to Warren where his brother William Doud and himself established the Packard Electrical Company, which made electrical cables, lamb bulbs and transformers in 1890

 

In 1893, James Ward became interested in gasoline automobiles had made sketches of his own horseless carriage, though due to the financial difficulties he could not build the machine.

In 1895 James Ward travelled to Europe to purchase an early De Dion- Bouton tricycle.

In 1898, James Ward purchased a Winton Motor Carriage, he had problems with the vehicle, and due to a conversation between Mr Winton and Mr Packard, he decided to build his own vehicle.

 

James Ward became the founder of the Packard Motor Car

 

William Doud continued running the Packard Electrical Company. James Ward continued living in Warren, he continued his interest in Packard, and regally visited the company located at Detroit.

 

James Ward was the president of the Packard Motor Car Company from 1900 - 1909. He then stepped down and continued as chairman until 1915.

Mr Henry B. Joy took over the presidency and was in power until 1916 before he passed in the presidency.
 

James Ward Packard passed away on the 20th March 1928,

 

With the passing of James Ward Packard the Packard family crest became the official Packard Emblem, thus to honour the founder of this great marque ... Packard
